1. What are geopolymers?
Geopolymers are inorganic minerals closely related to natural stones. Like stones, geopolymers are extraordinarily durable and very hard. Their structure consists of mineral components, like ceramic tiles.
2. What is so special about geopolymer technology?
Because of their molecular design and the use of selected raw materials, geopolymers offer a wide variety of possibilities. For example, the developers at PCI succeeded in developing PCI Geofug® high-convenience grout featuring high resistance to acids and mechanical loads as well as being extremely easy to clean.
3. What is the difference between PCI Geofug® and cementitious grout?
In order to highlight the difference, it is necessary to understand that the cementitious joint is the weakest link in ceramic floor coverings that meet increasingly stringent quality requirements and growing demands. In the short or long term, joints made solely from cement-based grout are attacked by acid household cleaning agents. In comparison, PCI Geofug® has a considerably longer service life when exposed to such household cleaning agents (this has been confirmed by tests carried out by the Fraunhofer Institute). In addition, PCI Geofug® offers two outstanding benefits compared with cementitious grout, the peciclean® effect and its photocatalytic properties.
4. What is the peciclean® effect?
The peciclean® effect allows a surface almost to clean itself with the assistance of water. In contrast to joints filled with cementitious grout, the super-hydrophilic surface means that water can flow under the dirt, allowing it to be mopped up quite easily with a cloth. Superhydrophilic means that the surface actively attracts water, in contrast to a hydrophobic surface, which repels water. The result is the formation of an „infinite“ film of water under the foreign matter. As a result, the dirt practically floats away and the joint is virtually self-cleaning.
5. What is photocatalysis?
Although photocatalysis sounds rather complicated, it is really quite simple. In combination with the titanium oxide contained in the material, ultraviolet radiation in sunlight or artificial light forms active molecules from oxygen and the moisture in the air. These active molecules destroy residues and certain mould fungi, keeping the joint hygienically clean.
6. Can I really use acid household cleaning agents?
Yes, you can. The cleaning agents often used on taps and tiled surfaces attack purely cementitious joints over the course of time. The results are washed out joints and time-consuming refurbishment work. Thanks to PCI Geofug®, this is a thing of the past as acidic household cleaning agents do not attack it. The result is a grouted joint that stays clean in the long term.
7. Why are PCI Geofug® joints so attractive and brilliant?
The special attraction of PCI Geofug® is its closed surface with a homogeneous colour. Unappealing discoloration caused by efflorescence of excess lime is a thing of the past. Thanks to geopolymer technology, the joint dries with absolutely consistent colouring because there is no excess lime. The surface is extremely smooth and strong. In fact, this is the most attractive joint between two tiles.
8. What are the convenience features of PCI Geofug®?
Experienced practitioners confirm that PCI Geofug® is extremely convenient to use, from the pack through to application. The convenient 5 kg pail, which can be used for mixing following the addition of water, can also be reclosed. This means that it is also possible to make up only part of the pail. The remaining material is protected and can be stored for several months. PCI Geofug® is always quick and easy to apply, whether you prefer to use a hard or soft rubber float. Within the 45-minute pot life, you can also grout large surfaces. PCI Geofug® does not harden on the surface as experienced with conventional cementitious grout. The long washing interval is also extremely convenient. Depending on the type of tiles, it may be possible to wash the surface after 5 minutes. Although the grout may still be soft or shiny, it cannot be washed out, as with cementitious grouts.
The long washing interval also means that the surface can still be washed without any problems after 60 minutes. And any residual smears can even be removed on the next day, simply using a moist cloth.
9. Where can I use PCI Geofug®?
You can use PCI Geofug® in any interior applications where a brilliant homogeneous appearance, an almost self-cleaning surface and high resistance to acidic household cleaners are required. Apart from the home, it is also the grout material of choice for use on demanding projects like shopping malls, office buildings, sales areas and showrooms.
10. Who benefits from using PCI Geofug®?
Everyone. The benefits of PCI Geofug® are not limited to building owners, tilers, architects or investors. For the first time, everyone involved in the project benefits.
For building owners, the peciclean® effect represents considerable added value. For young mothers, for example, hygiene is especially important. The joint stays clean and makes cleaning considerably easier – in kitchens, bathrooms and toilets. For tilers, the smooth consistency of the material and the variable time window make application extremely convenient. High joint filling levels and curing without efflorescence provide the tiler with additional security and make for satisfied customers.
For architects, the brilliant appearance and the ceramic properties of PCI Geofug®, mean that the tiles and the joints can be seen as a harmonious unit for the first time. The homogeneous colouring and the fine-pored closed surface are a quantum leap in terms of interior design. The functional surface with the peciclean® effect also offers added value for clients.
For investors, the high resistance of the joint offers significant added value. To date, it has been necessary to replace cementitious joints exposed to acidic household cleaning agents at regular intervals, which resulted in higher operating expenses. Thanks to PCI Geofug®, with its innovative geopolymer technology, this is a thing of the past and operating expenses can be minimized. This applies both to cleaning and to replacement intervals.
