Terrace renovation with PCI product outdoor system for large-format tiles
Whether in the first rays of spring sunshine, on warm summer evenings, or during the colorful autumn: The terrace extends the living space of the house to the outside. It invites relaxation and togetherness – especially when it is crafted with skill using professional products. In this way, it brings joy for many years. Just like here. During the complete renovation of the terrace in the Görlitz district in Germany, specialists carefully installed modern outdoor ceramics over an area of 90 square meters. The result of the renovation is an attractive, durable terrace surface that makes you look forward to the warm season.
To lay the anthracite-colored outdoor tiles made of porcelain stoneware in the format 40 x 120 x 2 cm, the tiler opted for the bonded installation with the PCI product system for big tiles. This system enables drainage-capable installation, preventing sealed areas and water accumulation on the property. Additionally, it prevents loose, breaking joints or shifting tiles with bonded bedding
Since the load-bearing and frost protection layers are installed unbound, they can be easily created. In this process, the contractor Patrick Tschotow from Oderwitz relied on expert advice and support from the PCI technical consultant. He explains: “Steffen Schütze provided us with a detailed description of the structure, demonstrated how a drainage screed works using a sample of PCI Pavifix DM, and gave us hands-on training on how to properly handle and apply the products.”
In the first step, the craftsmen prepared the terrace substructure, compacted it, and installed the drainage channel. The base areas of the adjacent walls were sealed with the flexible sealing slurry PCI Seccoral 1K. Corners were reinforced with PCI Pecitape 120 Objekt.
Drainage Screed: Installation Using Pump Technology
Based on the created level and stable substrate, the tile setters installed the drainage screed PCI Pavifix DM using pump technology (Estromat). This screed is very easy to handle, can be easily leveled, dries quickly, and allows for rapid readiness for tiling. As a result, the next steps in the process could follow quickly.
For laying the tiles, the tiler chose PCI Nanorapid. This flexible tile adhesive stands out with its long working time and quick setting, regardless of weather conditions. Combined with its flexibility, which compensates for temperature fluctuations and substrate temperatures, it makes it the ideal adhesive mortar for outdoor.
Grouting was then carried out with PCI FT Megafug. This cement-based grout is suitable for joint widths ranging from one to ten millimeters, is easy to work with, and can be walked on after approximately two hours. The corner, joint, and movement seams were sealed by the craftsmen with PCI Silcofug E. This elastic sealant is resistant to weathering and UV radiation.
Conclusion: Comfortable Application, Secure Installation
The conclusion is overwhelmingly positive, both for the tiler and the client. "The PCI product systems are reliable. They are easy to work with and ensure a secure and durable installation," says Patrick Tschotow. He was also impressed by the ability to install PCI Pavifix DM as a drainage screed using pump technology (Estromat), as it is easy to level, dries quickly, and allows for firm, drainage-capable installation of the outdoor tiles, all at a good price-performance ratio.
Now, the family in Neugersdorf is looking forward to the many summers they will spend in their spacious outdoor living room – with professionally installed, attractive outdoor tiles.
