PCI system: Large-format tiles without movement joints

Modern, large tiles are predestined for large surface areas. The joints play a significant role in the design of an overall harmonious image. However, the tile layer often needs to cut large tiles so that movement joints in the screed are continued in the tile covering. The result: Uneven joints with wide silicone grouting that disturb the overall image. As of now, PCI Augsburg GmbH offers the possibility, with their intelligent system "Uniform joints", to tile over the movement joints and integrate them into the tiling.

 

Movement joints are often essential in floor constructions – determined by the room geometry and size. The crux: The main movement joints (previously) needed to be imitated directly by the tile coverings. This limited the selection of the tile formats or reduced the desired expansive effect that was aimed at when using large format tiles and panels. A wide joint that does not fit in the pattern disturbs the harmonious image. "We can now offer the option, with our intelligent system "Equally spaced joint pattern", to tile over movement joints in conventional and heated cement screeds", explained Thorsten Leppler, PCI product manager for tiling materials. "The permanently elastic joint is simply offset, whereby the covering joint closest to the expansion joint is implemented using PCI Silcofug E, for example. Our system with PCI Pecilastic U in the substrate is so efficient that this silicone joint does not need to be any wider than the other covering joints." The advantage: more creative freedom as the joint pattern can be laid independently of the movement joints in the screed.

 

Three factors for harmonious jointing

"Our proven "Universal tiling" system forms the basis for the new "Equally spaced joint pattern" system", explained Thorsten Leppler. "It is supplemented by three factors. PCI Apogel Dübel reduces possible vertical movements on the screed joints. The waterproofing and isolating membrane PCI Pecilastic U isolates the covering from the substrate. And the new PCI Flexmörtel S2 complements the system with its excellent properties." This flexible tile adhesive was specially developed to absorb horizontal forces. The adhesive tensile strength therefore exceeds the values required for the highest classification by a factor of three. In the " Equally spaced joint pattern" system, PCI Flexmörtel S2 is used as an isolating layer on the screed under the isolating membrane and also for laying floor tiles. The tile adhesive displays its greatest strengths on critical substrates – above all when time is a factor, i.e. where high residual moisture and fresh cement screeds are present. The advantage: More flexibility in everyday business and high implementation reliability, even under difficult conditions. "Like all our systems, success is based on the intelligent combination of high-quality PCI products", explained Thorsten Leppler. PCI thereby creates added value, benefiting all participants – workers, builders and planners.

Until now, movement joints in the screed needed to be copied in the tile covering. This led to an uneven tiling pattern.

The PCI "Equally spaced joint pattern" system provides the possibility of tiling over movement joints in the screed and integrating them into the tiling.

PCI Apogel SH and PCI Apogel Dübel are an ideal combination to prevent vertical movements in expansion joints.

The proven "Universal tiling" system forms the basis for the new "Equally spaced joint pattern" system. Three factors supplement this system: PCI Apogel Dübel reduces possible vertical movements on the screed joints. The waterproofing and isolating membrane PCI Pecilastic U isolates the covering from the substrate. And the new PCI Flexmörtel S2 complements the system with its excellent properties.

Once the resin has set, PCI Pecilastic U is bonded to the screed with PCI Flexmörtel S2 as an isolating layer.

Tiles can also be laid with the new PCI Flexmörtel S2. This tile adhesive was specially developed for absorbing horizontal forces. The adhesive tensile strength therefore exceeds the values required for the highest classification by a factor of three.

Once the floor surface has been grouted with PCI Nanofug Premium, the covering joints bordering the separation joints are sealed with PCI Silcofug E.
